Uptown Progressives Position Statement on Racism and Discrimination

All people are entitled to equal treatment in their homes, workplaces, and before the law, and all people are entitled to protection from discrimination on the basis of their age, race, religion, national origins, gender, sexual orientation, or physical disability.

Background
The recent events on the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina illustrated the horrific neglect of the poor and citizens of color. Despite local, state, and national civil rights legislation, millions of Americans still suffer from institutional racism and discrimination on a daily basis, and the problem is growing.

Recommendations

  1. We call on Congress to vote stiffer penalties for discriminatory behavior in employment, housing, health care and enact other policies to address these problems.
  2. We call on the federal administration and local and state officials to enforce existing anti-discrimination legislation.
  3. We expect the judiciary to maintain this country’s commitment to non-discrimination and affirmative action by national, state, or local governments or by private organizations.
  4. UP supports efforts to assure civil rights are protected such as voting and rights related to privacy addressed in the Bill of Rights.
