Petroleum, as well as natural gas and coal, are finite, non-renewable natural resources that are running out and polluting the earth. We must move to energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and reduced use of unsafe or polluting energy resources.
Background
These natural resources are used to power automobiles and industry. They are also used in the manufacture of plastics, synthetic fabrics, and many other household and industrial products. The U.S. reached its peak of oil production in 1970. Our country is heavily dependent on oil from the Middle East and other regions. It is anticipated that the world will pass peak oil production between now and 2020.
Recommendations
We call on Congress and policy makers to encourage and support renewable and sustainable forms of energy such as wind and solar power. We need an aggressive national policy to end dependence on fossil fuels. All forms of energy must be fairly priced. Conservation and mass transit systems must be increased and expanded. Communities must be made pedestrian friendly and bicycle paths must be expanded.
